Regular Comprehensive Eye Examinations

Will check for the onset of diabetic retinopathy … which left untreated is a leading cause of blindness

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY affects blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive layer of tissue in the back of your eye). If you have diabetes, it’s important to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam, at least once a year.

Diabetic retinopathy usually affects both eyes. Over time, too much sugar, in your blood, can lead to the blockage of the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, cutting off its blood supply. As a result, the eye attempts to grow new blood vessels. But these new blood vessels don’t develop properly and can leak easily.

Treatment with Iridex laser and Avastin or Vabysmo eye injections are the best treatments to combat diabetic retinopathy.

Dr Alejandro treats Diabetic Retinopathy at Orange Grove Medical Centre every week … “ the sooner this diabetic eye disease is diagnosed and treated, the better the results “

Diabetes combined with hearing loss is a common disorder, especially in the elderly.

Diabetes and aging share some risk factor in hearing loss.
Diabetes is a risk factor for microvascular disease, which includes hearing loss. Ageing does also increases the risk of hearing loss .
Diabetes (type 2) and sensorineural hearing loss are common health problems manifested with ageing.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have been associated with hearing loss.

Individuals with diabetes have twice the incidence of hearing loss compared to those without diabetes, and those with prediabetes have a 30% higher rate of hearing loss.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss has its own set of risk factors and shares others with diabetes. Sensorineural hearing loss, results from loss of or damage to some of the tiny hair cells in the cochlear in the inner ear.

Most cases of hearing loss are permanent.
This means that hearing loss cannot be reversed and that there is no medical cure or treatment that can bring the hearing back or restore hearing, …… unless the hearing loss is caused by infections or earwax.

But a permanent hearing loss can be treated by using hearing aids.
